25 Essential Tequila Cocktails

Tequila is one of the best-selling spirits in America*, and for good reason! This Mexican agave liquor stars in iconic classics like the Margarita and Paloma, but it shines in so many more creative mixed drinks.

As a certified mixologist who’s studied tequila cocktails and made more than I can count, I’m sharing my collection of my top 25 essential tequila drinks for and occasion!

Why I Love Tequila Cocktails

What makes so tequila special? After years of experimenting with this spirit, I’ve found this: tequila brings a uniquely complex flavor profile to drinks. The natural earthiness and sweetness of blue agave cannot be substituted by any other ingredient on earth (even 0 proof tequila!), and it pairs so well with citrus, spice, sweetness, and even bitter flavors.

Over the years, my husband Alex and I have tested hundreds of tequila drink recipes in our home bar and refined each one to find the perfect balance of flavors. These 25 tequila cocktails are our absolute favorites: from classics cocktails to modern twists. I can’t wait for you to dive in!

Tequila 101: Choosing the Right Bottle

A great tequila cocktail starts with picking out the right tequila. When shopping for tequila, here’s what to look for:

  • Tequila blanco (or “silver”): Aged less than 2 months with a bold, straightforward agave flavor. I like blanco for tequila cocktails with fruity flavors like a Tequila Sunrise or Frozen Margarita.
  • Tequila reposado (“rested” in Spanish): Aged 2-12 months in oak barrels, developing notes of vanilla and caramel. This is my go-to for sophisticated cocktails like the Classic Margarita or Cadillac Margarita.
  • Tequila añejo (“aged”): Save these expensive bottles for enjoying neat rather than mixing in cocktails.

My top tip: A mid-range tequila ($25-45) is perfect for cocktails compared to the bottom shelf options. Look for bottles with “100% blue agave” on the label.

Expert Tips for Success

  • Use fresh juices: Always use fresh juice in tequila cocktails (I’m sure you know this!). No bottled lime juice allowed!
  • Salt rim technique: Moisten the outside edge of your glass with lime, then dip it at a 45-degree angle. This keeps the salt on the outside edge of the glass.
  • Consider glassware: The right glass is not just about look: it helps with aroma and keeping the drink cool.
  • Quality ice: For the most stunning drinks, consider making clear ice at home: it’s my favorite trick for making cocktails look like they came from a fancy bar.
