Baileys White Russian recipe

Want a fun way to mix up a White Russian? Try the Baileys White Russian! Using Baileys Irish cream instead of heavy cream adds even more sophistication to this classic drink.

In fact, it tastes a bit like a Mudslide, which also features vodka, Kahlua, and Baileys! The first time I whipped up this variation, I was pleasantly surprised by the harmony of the flavors in this drink.

Why Baileys Makes This Cocktail Better

I’ve tested the White Russian with both heavy cream and Baileys, and honestly I like Baileys better. Heavy cream gives you that classic look with the swirls, but it’s a little too rich for my taste.

Baileys adds complexity: the Irish whiskey base melds with the coffee notes from Kahlua, and the cream texture keeps the drink smooth. It’s like a boozy chocolate vanilla latte: it’s essentially a Mudslide without the cream, served on ice.

Ingredients You’ll Need

The White Russian is a 1950’s classic cocktail made with vodka, heavy cream, and Kahlua, recently revived in popularity by the 1998 movie The Big Lebowski. For a Baileys White Russian recipe, just swap out the heavy cream for Baileys Irish cream. It gives the drink a sophisticated flair, while still keeping its retro charm. You’ll need:

  • Vodka: Use a mid-range vodka. You don’t need top-shelf here with the other strong flavors.
  • Kahlua or coffee liqueur: Kahlua is the classic choice, though any coffee liqueur works, like Tia Maria.
  • Baileys Irish Cream: The 17% ABV keeps the drink from being too strong and adds vanilla and cocoa notes.

How to Make a Baileys White Russian

The best part about this classic drink is that you can build it in the glass: no cocktail shakers or mixing glasses required. Here are a few tips:

  • Add the 2 oz vodka and 1 oz Kahlua to a glass, then pour in 1 oz Baileys.
  • Stir gently to get the swirl effect. If you stir the drink right away, it will be a beige color. It’s more fun to get the swirl effect! Stir it gently just a few times, and the cream will swirl into the Baileys and Kahlua in a beautiful pattern.

Tip: You can step up the appearance of this drink with clear ice: artisanal ice that’s crystal clear instead of cloudy like what you get out of an ice tray. It’s easy to make: all you need is 24 hours and a small cooler. Go to my guide on How to Make Clear Ice.

What Makes Baileys Special

Did you know Baileys Irish Cream is the most popular liqueur sold worldwide? Here’s a little more about what makes it so fan friendly:

  • Baileys Irish Cream is a liqueur made with Irish whiskey, cream, and cocoa that’s manufactured in Ireland. It’s the most popular liqueur worldwide. It’s low alcohol: the ABV is 17% (compared to 40% in spirits like gin, whiskey, and vodka).
  • Its sweet chocolate vanilla flavor has inspired many popular Baileys drinks like the Mudslide, Chocolate Martini, and the Espresso Martini with Baileys. It’s also great for splashing into coffee.

Store an opened bottle of Baileys in the pantry for up to 2 years after its manufacture date. You can also refrigerate it: it’s good between 32 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

Variations to Try

Once you’ve mastered the basic Baileys White Russian, here are some other fun twists:

  • Peppermint White Russian: Add a splash of peppermint schnapps for a holiday twist. The Peppermint White Russian is phenomenal during December.
  • Spiced Version: Sprinkle the top with a dash of cinnamon or freshly grated nutmeg on top for warmth.
  • Cold Brew: Add 1 oz cold brew concentrate for a more pronounced coffee flavor.
  • Salted Caramel: Rim the glass with caramel sauce and sea salt before building the drink.
