Brownie Batter Hummus

This brownie batter hummus is a healthy dessert dip that tastes just like brownie batter! Made with chickpeas, cocoa powder and maple syrup, it’s a fan favorite that’s great for parties. Our family scrapes the bowl clean!

Brownie batter hummus

Here’s a healthy sweet snack that wins over everyone who tries it: brownie batter hummus! Wait a minute: sweet hummus? Yes, this chickpea-based dip tastes just as creamy and chocolaty as its name—yet it’s made with all wholesome ingredients.

As cookbook authors and professional food bloggers, we’re always looking for fun ideas for healthy treats. This dip has become a regular at our gatherings—I recently brought it to my book club and everyone demanded the recipe! It’s a creative spin on our popular chocolate hummus. A few reasons you’ll love this recipe:

  • Healthy ingredients: Made with protein-packed chickpeas and almond butter
  • Quick and easy: Comes together in just 5 minutes in your food processor
  • Kid-friendly: Children go crazy for this dip (we’ve served it to many, including our own two kids!)
  • Crowd-pleaser: Disappears quickly at parties and potlucks
  • Works for many diets: Naturally gluten-free and vegan

Tips for making brownie batter hummus

This brownie batter hummus recipe is quick to put together and requires only 5 ingredients (plus salt). You can also top with a few mini chocolate chips as a garnish! Here are a few things to note to make it perfect every time:

  • Use a food processor: While you can use a high-powered blender, a food processor creates the ideal creamy texture without overheating the dip.
  • Save the aquafaba: Don’t drain away all the chickpea liquid! Adding a tablespoon or two of this “aquafaba” helps achieve the perfect consistency.
  • Adjust sweetness to taste: Start with the recommended amount of maple syrup, then add more if you prefer a sweeter dip.

Flavor variations

We know many people are cooking for families with varying tastes and dietary needs. Here are some easy swaps and additions to customize this brownie batter hummus:

  • Peanut butter version (or nut free): Swap almond butter for peanut butter for a chocolate-peanut butter flavor combination. Or, use sunflower butter for nut free.
  • Mocha brownie: Mix in 1 teaspoon of espresso powder or instant coffee for a subtle coffee flavor.
  • Chocolate chip: Fold in ¼ cup mini chocolate chips after blending for added texture and chocolate flavor (instead of sprinkling on top).
  • Protein boost: Add a scoop of protein powder before blending.

Ways to dip this brownie batter hummus

This brownie batter hummus is deliciously creamy, chocolaty, and pairs well with many different dippers. We love to serve it with strawberries and apple slices (Pink Lady is our favorite variety). Here are a few ways to serve this brownie batter hummus:

  • Fresh fruit: Strawberries, apple slices, banana slices, and raspberries are all great companions.
  • Crackers or pretzels: Graham crackers, pretzels, or chocolate wafer cookies give a satisfying crunch. We like pretzels best for a salty sweet hit!
  • Dessert board centerpiece: Make it the star of a dessert grazing board with various fruits, cookies, and crackers.
  • Filling for stuffed dates: Pipe the hummus into pitted Medjool dates for a tasty snack.
  • Toast topper: Spread on toast with banana slices and a drizzle of honey.
  • Brownie sundae: Layer in a parfait glass with maple-sweetened yogurt, berries, and granola (or crumbled raw brownies)

Storing leftovers

This dip keeps well in the refrigerator; store it in an airtight container for up to 5 days. The flavors continue to develop over time.

Dietary notes

This brownie batter hummus recipe is naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and vegan.

Frequently asked questions

Does brownie batter hummus actually taste like brownie batter?

Surprisingly, yes! The combination of cocoa powder, maple syrup, and vanilla creates that classic brownie batter flavor, while the almond butter adds richness. Most people can’t believe it’s made from chickpeas!

Can I make this without a food processor?

While a food processor gives the best texture, you can use a high-powered blender. You may need to add a bit more liquid and stop to scrape down the sides frequently.

How thick should brownie batter hummus be?

The consistency should be similar to a thick frosting or traditional hummus—spreadable but not runny. The texture can vary based on the brand of chickpeas. If yours is too thick, add a bit more aquafaba (the liquid from the can of chickpeas) one teaspoon at a time.
