Our top family dinner ideas—recipe list

Pro tips for stress-free family dinners

After years of cooking for my family, I’ve learned a few strategies that make dinnertime run more smoothly.

  • Start with veggie snacks. Put out a plate of carrot sticks, sliced peppers, and snap peas so hungry kids have no option but to go for the veggies. (You could even set out some Yogurt Ranch Dip too.)
  • Work together. Work together with your partner if possible: Alex and I often cook together as a couple, and it makes everything easier!
  • Don’t sweat it if it doesn’t go over the first time. I’ve learned that it takes introducing a new flavor about seven times before it really sticks, and my kids’ tastes change constantly.
  • For healthy ways to end the meal, try bringing out Peanut Butter Dip with apple slices as a post-meal snack that seems like a treat but is full of nutritious ingredients.

Storage and meal prep tips

Many of these family dinner ideas work well for meal prep and leftovers. Soups like the chicken and rice soup and black bean chili actually taste better the next day and freeze for up to 3 months.

Casseroles like the enchilada casserole can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking. The sheet pan dinners reheat in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes.

Dietary notes

This collection includes options for many dietary preferences: vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and pescatarian recipes are all clearly marked. Many can be easily adapted to meet specific needs with simple ingredient swaps.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes

  • Category: Main dish
  • Method: Stovetop
  • Cuisine: Mediterranean
  • Diet: Gluten Free

Ingredients

For the chicken

  • 8 boneless, skinless chicken thighs (about 2 pounds)
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

For the rice

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small white or yellow onion, minced
  • 1 ½ cups white rice
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon dried dill

For the gremolata

  • ⅓ cup finely chopped Italian parsley, (about 1/2 bunch)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest (1 large lemon)
  • 1/2 small garlic clove, minced
  • 1 pinch kosher salt
  • 1 grind black pepper

Instructions

  1. Dry the chicken thighs and season with the kosher salt, garlic powder, onion powder and lots of fresh ground pepper. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium high heat. Add the chicken and cook 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown. Remove the chicken to a plate, leaving the juices in the pan.
  2. Reduce the heat to medium low and add the garlic and onion. Cook for 5 minutes, until the onions are very tender, stirring occasionally. Stir in the broth, rice, dill and kosher salt, scraping the bottom of the pan to pick up all of the seasoning from the chicken. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and top with the browned chicken thighs. Cover with a lid and cook at a low simmer for 15 to 18 minutes until rice is tender and all of the liquid is absorbed.
  3. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl mix together the ingredients for the gremolata.
  4. Remove the heat and let stand covered for 5 minutes. Uncover and fluff the rice with a fork, then top with the gremolata and serve warm.

St Germain Spritz

The St Germain Spritz is a delightful blend of elderflower liqueur, sparkling wine, and club soda. It’s perfect for sipping on patios, enjoying at brunch, or anytime you crave a lightly sweet and bubbly cocktail! Why you’ll love this cocktail The first time I tried St Germain liqueur years ago is still a strong memory—the delicate, floral sweetness immediately captivated me! After testing countless St Germain cocktail recipes , the St Germain Spritz has become my absolute favorite way to showcase this elderflower liqueur. What makes this cocktail so special? Well, it’s so refreshing without being too sweet, sophisticated without being pretentious, and—maybe best of all—it takes minutes to prepare. I love other spritzes (like the popular Aperol Spritz), but I would pick this version every time! The light, effervescent quality makes it perfect as a brunch drink , but it’s equally great to make for a summer barbecue. The essential spritz ingredients The St Germain sp...
