Ozoni (Japanese New Year’s Soup)




 Ozoni is a traditional Japanese soup enjoyed during the New Year celebrations. This comforting dish features mochi (glutinous rice cakes) as its main ingredient, along with a variety of vegetables, and sometimes chicken or seafood, depending on regional variations. The broth can be clear or miso-based, providing a delicate yet flavorful foundation. Ozoni is cherished for its symbolic meaning, as the stretchy mochi represents longevity and the vibrant ingredients signify prosperity and good fortune for the coming year. 🥢
   

Ingredients:

  • 500ml of dashi broth
  • 100g of mochi
  • 50g of chicken breast
  • 30g of carrots
  • 30g of daikon radish
  • 30g of spinach
  • 1 piece of yuzu peel
  • Soy sauce to taste
  • Salt to taste

Kitchen Tools Needed:

  • Pot
  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Ladle



Instructions:

  • Prepare the dashi broth by boiling water with konbu and katsuobushi for flavor, then strain.
  • Cut the chicken breast into bite-sized pieces and sauté in a pot until cooked.
  • Add the sliced carrots and daikon to the pot and stir for a few minutes.
  • Pour the dashi broth into the pot and bring it to a simmer.
  • Add the mochi pieces and cook until they puff up and become soft.
  • In the last few minutes, add the spinach and season the soup with soy sauce and salt to taste.
  • Once everything is cooked, ladle the soup into a bowl and garnish with a piece of yuzu peel.
